Family Farmers

Farmers Profiles

Family farming can be broadly classified into the 3 following categories (1):

Subsistence: or self-consumption. With availability of land and income from own production insufficient to guarantee family reproduction. They resort to salaried work outside or within agriculture.

Intermediate: for sale and self-consumption. They are more dependent on their own production. With access to better land that allows them to cover family reproduction requirements. Generates little surplus for the reproduction and development of the productive unit.

Consolidated: self-sufficient production with access to markets. It uses better land resources, has access to markets (technology, capital, products) and generates surpluses for the capitalization of the productive unit.

Family farmers who alternate between subsistence production activities and market sales will be assisted by AgroFor.
